Key workshop sessions

  • Participants explored the environmental impact and recyclability of the seven plastic polymers, the lifespan of plastics, and national legislation on plastic bans, with insights from government representatives..

  • Through hands-on group exercises, participants assessed alternatives to common single-use items, learned about circular business models (e.g. reusable systems, refillables, take-back schemes), and considered feasibility within their own operations.

  • Group work focused on overcoming financial, behavioural, and logistical obstacles, while ensuring changes do not compromise guest experience or safety, or create unintended issues like increased food waste or other negative environmental impacts.

  • A hotel walkthrough exercise helped participants put theory into practice by identifying waste reduction opportunities across departments.

  • Participants developed strategies for involving staff and guests, designing awareness campaigns that can transparently communicate sustainability whilst avoid greenwashing.

Rogers Hospitality has been a proud signatory of the GTPI, and the three-day event in Mauritius in November 24 was a great opportunity to deepen our commitment and engage further with the movement.

We were pleased to have a large team participate, reflecting our dedication to implementing a more circular economy of plastics, and supporting industry-wide progress. The event was well-structured and highly engaging, with a mix of presentations, interactive sessions, and video content that sparked valuable conversations and practical learning.

It created space for genuine collaboration, not only between hospitality businesses, but also with suppliers, NGOs, and policymakers. Our team came away inspired, better informed, and ready to take the next steps. Events like this play an important role in moving the sector forward, and we’re proud to be part of that journey.

Working with Jo as part of the GTPI post-event bilateral support has been a highly positive experience for our team at Raffles Bali. Her expertise in plastic reduction strategies and GTPI reporting requirements helped us establish systems that are both practical and manageable. She guided us through the process of tracking and monitoring our plastic consumption in a way that felt achievable, setting us up to report more easily and efficiently in the future.

What stood out most was her collaborative approach. She took the time to listen to our challenges, offered tailored solutions, and ensured the process aligned with our sustainability goals.

We’ve already seen improvements in how we gather data and identify opportunities to reduce plastic use, and we feel much better prepared for future reporting. We’d happily recommend Jo to any hotel seeking hands-on, thoughtful support in reducing single-use plastics and moving toward more sustainable operations.

A heartfelt thank you for the amazing three-day workshop! It was an absolute pleasure to be part of it. The energy, knowledge, and passion you brought to the sessions were truly inspiring. As an organisation working in recycling and education, we found the tools and guidance incredibly practical, well-structured, and immediately useful for applying circular principles to our work. The workshop not only deepened our understanding of the hospitality sector’s challenges and opportunities, but also motivated us to take action. We were proud to sign on to the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative straight away and look forward to using what we learned to support others on this journey.
